Matchbook Reliquaries - 2.5 hour class
$75
Michael deMeng

Student Level: All Skill Levels

Workshop Description:
How cool would it be if you walked into a smoky bar, reached for a book of matches and learned it was an original piece of art. I started working on such a series because of a friend who obsessively collects matchbooks from all over the planet, and I have to say that he has some nifty pieces of memorabilia. Being a sucker for hand crafted things, I wanted to take the concept one step further, and...viola. Matchbook reliquaries. The thing I love about this series is it symbolically emphasizes the lack of permanence in the world...poof...and its up in smoke. In this class, students will transform matchbooks or matchboxes into small shrines using assemblage, collage and painting. The finished products can be used as a framed object, a pin or (I suppose) a utilitarian object to light the barbeque with.
