Introduction to Faux Bone - 2.5 hour class
$75
Linda and Opie O'Brien

Student Level: All skill levels

Workshop Description:
Does it seem that most things we love are either illegal, immoral, expensive or fattening! the cost of gold and sterling silver is over the moon and the use of bone and ivory in scrimshaw jewelry is off limits. what's a person to do! this mini class will introduce you to an exciting, inexpensive, non-toxic, PVC material called faux bone, which can be cut, carved, sawn, drilled, riveted, filed, sanded, heat formed, colored polished and more! demos will abound as each of you work hands-on and create a beautiful pendant in class with very few tools. instructors will supply most materials. chain is optional.

Kit Fee: $5

Student Supply List:
* an x-acto knife
* a pencil
* a disposable water container (the size that a sandwich would fit in) and a rag
* a file - preferably a 6" or 8" half-round bastard cut file from the hardware store. it's inexpensive and often comes with a wooden handle. we'll have a few to share, but sharing takes time and it's a great tool to have in your toolbox.

Optional:
* if you think you might want to try your hand at riveting something to the "bone", bring a rivet hammer and bench block, and perhaps some beads and 20 gauge wire to create a dangle or two - if time permits.
* prisma color pencils if you have them. a pack of 12 is great.

Please Note: As you can see, the class scan shows three pieces of Faux Bone... in it's natural state, an engraved, colored pendant and a pendant riveted to patinated copper - complete with a hand made bail and bead dangles. The possibilities of this material are endless and definitely not limited to any one medium or style.
